Daurene Lewis

In 1984, Dr. Daurene E. Lewis (born in Bedford, Nova Scotia) was elected mayor of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada, making her the first female black mayor in all of North America. Four years later, Daurene Lewis entered provincial politics, becoming the first black woman in her province to run in a provincial election.

The registered nurse owned a business for many years, was involved in health care reform, and is an extremely active community leader and volunteer. She was formerly the executive director of the Centre for Women in Business at Mount Saint Vincent University. Lewis was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2002.
